News

23/06/2008

Well, first news item for 4 years? Was it worth the wait? Who knows, but anyway here we are.

What has happened in the last 4 years? Well to use a slightly technical term - sweet FA has been happening. Actualy that aint strictly true. The reason I am writing this is because we have, after all this time, some decent recordings to offload on you - the unsuspecting public of the World.

I think it would be fair to say that 23 Beasts no longer function as a band but it has come to my attention recently that the fruits of our previous efforts have been quietly fermenting over the years and lo and behold we now have on our hands, a cellar full of vintage wine. Domaine de Vingt-trois Beasts.

OK let's cut to the chase here. Way back when we recorded 4 of our songs using gear and premises that we begged borrwed and purchased off ebay. Matt and Jim then spent a considerable amount of time mixing and editing it all. It was only the other week that I heard the finished product for the first time. Well anyway, the 4 songs are here on the site for you to listen to, so have a look over in the audio section.

See you in another 4 years!

Lots of news. Lots and lots. Firstly, may we apologise for being crap for so long. Our bassist and guitarist left us; farewell Merton and eeeyan, you will be sorely missed. But now we have new people! We have Stuart on guitar and Andy on bass. They may even have their own little band member pages soon if i can get them to fill in the stuff. Ok, so we got new people, we had some practice, remembered how to play our songs (barely), and played a gig at Fibbers. It was battle of the bands again, and as per usual we came second! :-( What else is going on. Oh, the demo. Yes. The demo we recorded ooh almost a year ago now is nearing completion! Just need to put a few finishing touches and convince Matt that it shouldnt have hammond organ in it and all will be well. Expect to be able to waste your hard earned cash on our impeccable merchandise sometime very soon. So generally, yeah, we're back. More gigs will be happening soon.

As for the site. Well, there are many many additions. Most of the pages have been tweaked somewhat, but we have a few new additions. Firstly on number 6 on the nav thingy there's now a forum so get over there and blurt out your brain's waffling literary nonsense. Along similar sort of lines, you budding journalists out there can review our gigs! Just go to the gigs page, select Gig archive, find the gig u want to review and click submit a review! Type in your so-called review and it will appear on the site immediately. It will not be censored or any crap like that. Say what u like. If you think we're shit, please say so! What else can u do? erm, you can subscribe/unsubscribe from the mailing list automatically! There's other little bits and bobs which are far too interesting to mention here, plus generally there's much more information about bands we've played with, venues we've played at etc. Just click on stuff when it looks clickable and magic things will happen no doubt.

Thanks to EVERYONE who came down to see us at Fibbers Battle of the Bands the other week. Unfortunatewly we didnt make it to the next round, that honour went to Dustbowl Central. Apparently we were 2nd on the night, although our vote percentage was not enough to constitute going through as a 'high scoring loser'! In other, perhaps more interesting news, we have recorded most of the stuff towards our first demo. It is untitled at the moment, but will have 4 tracks and should be for sale at a gig near you soon. Watch this space for more news as the demo production process evolves. Oh, and even MORE exciting news: thecounter.com have decided to discontinue their free counter service, so we've changed over to a new one from Bravenet!! :-o

A bit quiet at the moment. We have a freshly married guitarist and a bassist in Surrey. Just what is a band supposed to do in times like these? Well, we've been writing some new songs and planning our first recording session. The result of these activities should be a couple of new songs debuting at one of our up coming spring gigs - see gigs page, and also a mini-album which should hopefully reach releasable status by early summer! We now have a review online of our gig at The Running Horse in Nottingham. Go read it - it's quite good! See Previous gigs on the gigs page. Just a quick reminder that we really need people to come down and support us at the Battle of the Bands heat at Fibbers on Wednesday 30 April. Cheers.

Well, we made it to the Battle Of the Bands Final again! But yet again we didn't win. That honour went to the Scassa Monakee Synth Quartet who thoroughly deserved the prize. The next few months are a bit sparse in terms of gigs. However, we have much to be getting on with: There are a whole handful of songs that are being written and these should see the light of day fairly soon. We are also thinking of recording a self financed EP. This will contain about 6 tracks and will be sold on CD for a relative pittance! Our next gig is in Nottingham and will be the first time we have performed in the city. See the gigs page for more details.

Lots more gigs now booked, with more in the pipeline. Plus, Battle of the Bands could yield many more gigs depending on how far we get. Looks like we've got a busy month ahead! - see the gigs page. We are also planning to record a rough demo over the coming weeks in practice for entering the studio later this year. Added some more links to the links page

We've entered two competitions: Fibbers' Battle of the Bands and University of York Battle of the Bands. Or Fibbers BoB and Uni BoB for short. Fibbers Bob is assessed via audience vote; a system which has never worked! In essence the band with the most mates wins. So we need YOU to come and vote for us. We have a warm up gig in january, but no confirmed date for our heat. The Uni BoB is assessed via a panel of judges that mark us out of a set if given criteria. We got to the final of this last year but didnt win, so this year; who knows!?

Last night saw the first performance of a new song at our Fibbers gig. The song has no name yet, but is becoming a band favourite and is more 'punky' than some of our other material.

Fibbers is now open again after help from the folks that run the bar fly. This is great news for the York music scene, including us. We have our next gig there on 9th September and hope to continue to play regular gigs at the venue.

Fibbers Closes! After ten years in business, Fibbers has closed it's doors for the last time. Everyone is saddened to see the demise of York's only 'proper' live music venue. However as part of it's 10th birthday celebrations (which coincided with its final day in business), the venue put on 2 whole days of live music which 23 Beasts were lucky enough to be part of. Infact 23 Beasts played a gig on Fibbers' final day of business! Claim to fame? maybe not... There is talk of fibbers being taken over by other parties, but for the time being this means that 23 Beasts, among many other York acts, will have to find gigs further afield. Expect to see more of us in and around Leeds and Bradford in the near future.

Gig at fibbers 11/08/02 confirmed - see gigs page. Surrey gig cancelled, although another is in the pipe line. Last week saw our first rehersal for some time. Two new songs are nearing gigable status so look out for these at the next few gigs. Early indications suggest we've been listening to too much dance music... added a link to Help for Bands website.
